What staining from Black Horse includes

Black Horse staining starts with a pressure wash and a wood brightener to lift gray, followed by replacement of any rotten or split boards, sanding of rough spots, and two coats of penetrating stain or solid-color stain matched to your exterior. Fences, gates, pergolas, patio covers and decks are all covered, with the same daily updates and walkthrough as a full repaint.

Bare wood in the Inland Empire grays in a single summer. Staining is not cosmetic. It is the difference between a fence that lasts 20 years and one you replace in 8.

Staining questions

Straight answers.

How often should a fence be stained in Southern California?

Every 3 to 5 years for a semi-transparent stain, longer for a solid stain, depending on sun exposure. South- and west-facing fences in Rancho Cucamonga and Chino Hills fade fastest. If water no longer beads on the wood, it is time.

Stain or paint for a wood fence?

Stain soaks into the wood and does not peel, which makes it the better choice for fences, pergolas and decks that take direct sun. Paint gives a solid color and works well on gates and trim that match the house. We recommend based on the wood's condition and the look you want.

Do you replace rotten fence boards?

Yes. Rot, splits and loose pickets are replaced before staining so the finish is even and the fence lasts. You get a call with photos before we replace anything.
